The Prompting Stack

A field guide to prompting and agent-system design: how the useful work moved from wording to context, harnesses, loops, and the structure of the workflow.

The Prompting Stack field guide, open on its title and abstract.

The Prompting Stack is a field guide. The useful work has kept moving outward, from the words in a prompt toward the information a system can see, the controls around a run, the loop that checks the work, and the shape of the workflow itself.

The guide is published in full at prompting.2.works. That is the text to read: version 1.0, 25 July 2026, about a 91-minute read. Quantitative claims there are tied to named models, benchmarks, and sources.

Prompting with purpose is the short companion. It stays at the keyboard: three patterns, three prompts, and a way to check the result. This field guide is the map of the system those patterns sit inside.
