Building tasks from verbal instructions

An EEG study of how practice and task complexity change the building of a new behaviour from words.

System outline
  1. 01Verbal instructions
  2. 02Practice
  3. 03Task complexity

The idea

A new task often arrives as a sentence. This paper measures the EEG while people turn those instructions into a sequence of behaviour they have not practised, and asks what practice on other trials, and the complexity of the task structure, do to that translation.

The approach

Novel sequences are built from verbal instructions. Practice-trial exposure and task-structure complexity are varied. EEG is recorded so the building of the task can be seen before the behaviour is fluent.

  • Instructions converted into a new sequence
  • Practice exposure and structural complexity
  • EEG during the building of the task
