Working memory, not processing speed, mediates fluid intelligence deficits in ADHD

ADHD-related gaps in fluid intelligence track working memory, not how fast information is processed.

System outline
  1. 01ADHD symptoms
  2. 02Working memory
  3. 03Fluid intelligence

The idea

People with more ADHD symptoms often score lower on fluid intelligence. This paper asks what carries that gap. The candidate that holds is working memory. Processing speed does not.

The approach

Symptom scores, working memory, processing speed, and fluid intelligence are measured in the same people, and the paths between them are compared. The mediation test is the result: the intelligence deficit associated with ADHD symptoms runs through working memory.

  • Fluid intelligence deficits associated with ADHD symptoms
  • Working memory as the mediator
  • Processing speed does not carry the effect
